SewCal Gal's 2012 FMQ Challenge - April

Image
This was an interesting challenge and in hand with what we are currently working on with Leah Day's Quilt Along. Seems like its wholecloth quit season. This month tutorial is my Don Linn. His work is really inspiring. I'm kind of a person who likes to experiment with designs and find new ones. So, this perfectly falls on my ally. So, I slightly modified the design by removing the leaf motif from the same place Don had removed the petal and inserted the tip of a feather. Looks like I can't stop my love for feathers ;). Here is my new design. I had do play with the scale little bit since I want to make the sampler quilt and SewCal Gal suggested that we make a 8x8 square for this project. So, Don's original design has reduced by 80% and then modified. Modified Design Traced the template using black sharpie pen Template create on tulle fabric Quilted template with flash...I used Aqua color thread Picture without flash to see the quilting Micro...

Sew Cal Gal's 2012 FMQ Challenge - March

Ann Fahl's work is very inspiring. such beautiful and vibrant thread work. Her quilts look so real. One of my favorite doodles on paper for years have been the Hibuscus flower which I had as a little girl in my garden. There are couple of them in my garden now too. Here is my design inspired by my doodling and Ann Fahl's march tutorial. The table runner I started around Christmas time but never finished it. Its never too late to finish a quilt. So, for the star I choose Leah Day's Star Flower FMQ and for the Christmas tree itself I used Leah Day's Flame Stitch FMQ . The thrid is design what I came up with inspired by this table runner itslef. It repeats a pattern of Star & Christmas tree just like the quilt itself. I really like this effect. Thank you Leah for your designs. And Thank you Ann Fahl for inspiring us and your great tutorial. Here are my designs for my notebook. This flower is my favorite and I'm not sure for how many years I have be...

SewCal Gal's 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge - February

Image
I have been working on the Sawtooth Star Wall hanging Quilt for past couple of weeks. I want to enter this for the February challenge. I had initially started this quilt for Leah Day's Quilt Along - Week5 . Here I have combined the lessons learned from Leah Day on Stippling and Diane Gaudynski's February tutorial on Echo Feather Plume. This is my first time ever to try the feathers in free motion quilting. If you have been reading my blog you would know that I just started learning free motion quilting this year. So here is how my process started towards the feathers. I doodled on paper quite a few times to get the feathers as seen in Diane Gaudynski's tutorial(link provided above). Then thought about how can I quilt them. I drew the stem of the feather first using a pen(this mark goes away when you iron the fabric). Then started quilting the feathers as per Diane's instructions. After quilting few feathers, I was more confident and quilted the feathers with...
