Wake up to KONA Day 7 - StarBurst

Welcome to the Day 7 of Wake up to KONA blog hop. First I wanted to thank two amazing people behind this blog hop, Mdm Samm for organizing this blog hop and Carol@Justletmequilt.com for being our cheer leader.

I am really excited about this blog hop. I have been collecting different shades of purple, blues/aquas/greens etc for last couple of years. Finally decided to go with the different shades of purples/magenta.
Kona Purple 10" Squares
I was very ambitious, but only got the wall hanging done. Here is my quilt top:
StarBurst Quilt - 32inch square
I have used 4 different background colors starting from top:
  • Kona Pepper
  • Kona Charcoal
  • Kona Coal
  • Kona Steel
You can't really tell much difference between the Kona Coal and Kona Steel. I did some black/white shots to see the color value and they seemed to be the same. But Steel has a little bit blue tint to it. Kona Coal seem to match the Kona Charcoal for the transition.

My original plan was to make a lap quilt(48x 64inches). I might still continue to make more stars.
I am really excited to announce that I will be offering this as a pattern. I hope to release it sometime in mid February. If you like the pattern, what size quilt would you prefer? Leave a comment below. If you're a no-reply blogger please make sure to leave your email id below. I will choose a winner on Jan 31st.

Check out the rest of amazing Kona projects in the blog hop:

Happy Quilting!

  1. Such an effective block in the solids! And I love the split background too!

  2. Hi Malini! You did a fantatic job! When I first saw the purples I cringed, but you combined them wonderfully with different shades of grade and made them jump out. You did an awesome job on those points. The design in the middle most definitely has to be accentuated with an awesome quilting. I look forward to see the end results. Keep on quilting and sewing!

  3. I love the purple and grey combo.

  4. Very pretty! I love purple! I would be most likely to make a throw size, around 60" or a little bigger.

  5. That is a very cool looking quilt. The stars almost look 3D. I do like the gradation in the backgrounds too. Great job.

  6. Love the purples...very pretty. I agree that the stars look very 3D...very fun! I'm into a twin size quilt these days...perfect for the bed and still small enough to drag to the couch LOL

  16. My favorite quilt 60"x70", lap size. Perfect for curling up on the couch or in a chair with a quilt.
    Your design is beautiful!

  17. I think this quilt would be great as a wall quilt. If it were made larger, I would throw in a twist of something else (block, sashing, etc.) The graduating background really makes this quilt come alive! svonfumetti at yahoo dot com

  18. My favorite quilt size for pattern is lap size (or for the pattern to contain multiple sizes).

    ReplyDelete
  19. Lap size is my favorite right now- too intimidated to try larger!

Love thisw and looking forward to the pattern release!

    ReplyDelete
  20. As a rule, I generally prefer the lap size, since it seems to be a favorite of anyone I've ever given one to, unless they specifically mention wanting something larger. I love this pattern and look forward to it's release.

  21. Wonderful pattern for a lap size quilt. Love your color choices.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like small, doll size and wall hanging size if you are talking about favorite to make. Favorite to receive? Lap size! However, I have never, ever turned away a gift of a bed sized quilt in my life!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Love the colors you used! I like lap size - not too big and not too small.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Love these Kona solids, especially the gray in the background makes the colors jump out at you. How can you not like this on any size bed? I would love to make 12" inch blocks in a variety of colors for a double bed. What a great wall hanging it would also make! Gosh I just can't stop imagining so many possibilities. Thanks for the opportunity to win a great pattern.

  25. This is so lovely! I love nautical stars. I think for this type I'd do a wall hanging and use americana colors!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'd like a small wall-hanging size quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lovely! I'd love to see that as a bed sized quilt (in my house that means queen sized!) You're colors are lovely and the different greys in the background make them pop! pbstrand@msn.com aka Beth @ Words & Stiches (who is frantically machine quilting for my Friday post!)

  28. Very striking. This will be a great pattern in any size. Personally, I like to purchase patterns that have the fabric requirements and layouts for multiple sizes. Looking forward to seeing your quilt finished. I recall you did a demo of one of your quilts at a local quilt shop last fall. Will you be doing that again with your pattern release? Thanks for sharing ... :) Pat

  37. Not a purple fan but this is just stunning! Can't wait to see it all finished!
What I forgot to write is that I like doing lap size quilts:)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Love the boldness of it and the colors really pop. My favorite size is a lap quilt but this would be great in a queen size.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Very pretty stars! My favorite size would be about a twin. I like long blankets, my husband and I are tall and I like to be covered toes and all, even when relaxing on the couch! Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Stars are my favourite and so pretty in the purples! Love it! I like to make lap size quilts as I find they are more manageable on my machine :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. These stars are gorgeous. And against the grey they really pop. I would love this pattern. Thanks for sharing and for inspiring.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I almost always make really large quilts. I don't care for square quilts usually so if I can I just add another row to it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow, those stars are so gorgeous! Awesome pattern, I think it's perfect for solids and can picture it looking great in any colour. I usually make bed size quilts as I find them most versatile (they can end up on the sofa or on a bed).

    ReplyDelete
  54. Great wall hanging. I like throw quilts about 60 x 70.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Wow! Your stars using Kona solids are spectacular. I love the pop of color against the charcoal background. Thank you sew much for hopping...

    ReplyDelete
  56. That is so attractive! The grays make a perfect background. I would probably not make more than 4 blocks, because for me I usually make table toppers. Not enough walls around here. =) Thanks so much!

  57. Your stars look so 3D, I really love the colours you've used!!

  62. Love the starbursts and the purple is just right against the grey. Fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I like how you used the colors in your quilt. My favorite size quilt is either baby or lap sizes. I struggle to get them quilted if they get much larger than that.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I would love it in a twin size. Just the right thing to brighten up my small guest room! :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Beautiful stars! A lap size quilt would be perfect.

  75. Lovely use of color. I like all the purple shades but the different grays for the background are GREAT. I always like lap-size but from a table runner to a king-size quilt, it would look fabulous.

    ReplyDelete
  76. King size quilts or queen is what I like to make.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I guess I'd have to make a block before I tell you that. LOL I do love how these look. I would probably make a small quilt for one of the grands.

    ReplyDelete
  78. love your new block ... love all the kona greys for background. I make mostly 55 inch square quilts and smaller pieces. bigger than that, they're too heavy and hard to work with.

    ReplyDelete
  79. That's a great block design. They look really nice. I usually make lap size quilts. Once I get started on one quilt my brain starts thinking about the next one to make so a lap size lets me get finished before I get tired of it! :)

  80. Omg so fantastic, they remind me of the European Christmas stars

    ReplyDelete
  81. 55"x80" is ideal, but it very often becomes just a bit different: 60"x60"

    ReplyDelete
  82. I actually like the pepper and charcoal used together. Approx. 40 x 40 would be great as well as a table runner or topper.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Love it! Twin size would be awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Love that block, I would probably make a lap quilt with it in blues.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Love the block, and I think I would use the sunset colors. The colors are fabulous in your squares, and they look quite complicated. Thank you for sharing these beautiful squares.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Forgot to say, I like to try things out on twin size, but will be making a king for our queen size bed in the future. Twin size is my first choice.

  94. My favorite size is always a queen size. I love the block and I especially live the gray/purple combination. My daughter has asked me to make her a t-shirt quilt from her college sorority t-shirts. She wants me to use gray with the t-shrits. She is having trouble picking grays. I finally just bought a couple of Kona grays when they were on sale. I think there are so many choices and many are close in value. Also, if the colors are in the range of your choices, it makes it very difficult to make a choice and with so many choices, it makes it very, very difficult to make a choice. So, I just make some choices. Also, I finally realized that I think she wants a double sided quilt. I'd rather she'd just say that she wants two quilts. She just can't make up her mind what she wants. I think I'm just going to make the quilt and she gets what she gets.
